At Bondi New York, we are committed to creating to-die-for polish colors alongside with keeping our dedicated fans safe and healthy. That is why we have chosen the 5-free route, which are polishes that are free of the “Big Five” toxic chemicals, Formaldehyde, Toluene, DBP, Camphor, and Formaldehyde Resin. You may realize that 5-free polish is a good thing, but do you really know the dangers of these substances? Let’s take a closer look as to why Bondi decided to ditch the chemicals and go au natural.
Formaldehyde is a chemical that can sometimes be found in nail strengtheners and other nail products. Long term exposure to this chemical, often referred to as a “human carcinogen” has been linked to certain cancers, such as nasal cancer and leukemia. It can be present in some household cleaners, glues, and other beauty products and cosmetics. Even in small amounts, exposure to Formaldehyde has short term effects, such as sore throat, runny nose, headache, fatigue, chest pain and nausea, just to name a few. Oh, and it is also used to embalm dead bodies.
Toluene is a toxin included in polish to help it go on smoothly. It is linked to birth defects and developmental issues in babies born to women who have had extended exposure during pregnancy. On top of that, inhaling high levels of toluene is dangerous to your nervous system, and can cause short term nausea and lightheadedness. It can be found in gasoline and household paint!
The next dangerous chemical is DBP, short for dibutyl phthalate. This is added to polish to prevent chipping, and like the others, it can be linked to cancer and birth defects, especially reproductive issues in baby boys. If you are pregnant, avoid at all costs!
Camphor is a chemically manufactured substance derived from the camphor tree which is used to make polish flexible once it dries. It is poisonous when ingested, and frequent inhalation can even cause seizures! Some minor side effects of camphor are redness and irritation.
Formaldehyde Resin is similar to Formaldehyde, and found in nail strengtheners. Especially if you are allergic, you should avoid this chemical. It is a skin allergen that can irritate your skin for up to three days after your manicure dries, and can even cause dermatitis!
Bottom line is that there are many alternatives to make your nails beautiful without all the harmful chemicals some nail polishes offer. So many companies have realized the dangers of these substances, and have switched to 3, 4 or 5-free alternatives. Excessive exposure can be detrimental to your health, especially if you are a salon worker or pregnant. You should not have to sacrifice your well-being for the sake of a beautiful manicure. Your nails can look awesome AND you can stay healthy. That’s what we’re here for! :)
